In contrast with CPAP-devices, which work with a constant pressure of air, the BiLevel forces air into the airways at two different pressures. The pressure increases when the person inhales and decreases when exhaling. The BiLevel is used for patients who do not comply with CPAP. While using a CPAP-device, the patient has to breathe out while air is gently pushed into his airways. This might be difficult for patients having a weak respiratory system. The BiLevel-device registers when the patient wants to exhale and lowers its pressure against this effort, enabling the patient to breathe out and sleep undisturbed.
